Weather Forces Cancellation of Round 1 Matches

Persistent poor weather across Christchurch over the past two days has led to the cancellation of all Round 1 matches at the Over 70’s Cricket World Cup.

Ongoing rain and unplayable ground conditions around Christchurch meant that, despite best efforts, it was not possible to safely proceed with the opening round of fixtures as scheduled. While disappointing for players eager to take the field, the decision was made with the safety of participants and the quality of play as the top priority.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) is now actively exploring options to reschedule the cancelled matches on one of the tournament’s designated rest days. This process is dependent on securing suitable grounds and favourable weather conditions, and discussions are currently ongoing with venue partners.

Further updates, including any revised match schedules, will be communicated as soon as greater clarity is available. Teams and supporters are encouraged to continue monitoring official tournament channels for the latest information.

We thank all teams, officials and supporters for their patience and understanding as we work through the impacts of the weather and aim to deliver the best possible tournament experience for everyone involved.
