Following their morning net session, Team Canada enjoyed a special behind-the-scenes tour of the Hagley Oval Cricket Precinct yesterday, gaining a deeper appreciation for one of New Zealand’s premier cricket venues ahead of their tournament fixtures.
Led by Suzanne Pearce, Executive Manager of Canterbury Cricket Trust, the group explored the iconic Hadlee Pavilion, including the player facilities and the Miles Group Members Lounge. From the changing rooms, to viewing lounges and the players dining room, players were able to see first-hand the standards and hospitality available at an international venue.
The tour then moved onto the field of play itself, with the team stepping out onto the Oval to take in the surroundings and reflect on the opportunity to play at such a historic ground. Suzanne shared insights into the history of Hagley Oval, its restoration and redevelopment, and the collaborative vision that has shaped it into a world-class international cricket venue within Hagley Park.
The visit also included a walk through the Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre, showcasing the wider cricket precinct and the facilities that support the game year-round — from community cricket through to elite international competition.
For Team Canada, the experience provided valuable context to the stage on which they are competing — connecting them not just with the playing surface, but with the story behind it.
Hagley Oval will host the Tournament Final on 5th March, and Team Canada have their sights set on playing in that match. The Miles Group Members Lounge will be open for spectators and other teams to watch the final, with the members bar offering food and beverage purchases for guests.
The Canterbury Cricket Trust is also pleased to offer similar behind-the-scenes tours to other visiting teams who may wish to explore Hagley Oval during rest days throughout the tournament. Tours are free of charge and available on weekdays during standard business hours and are subject to availability. You can book a tour here. (scroll to the bottom of the page)
