A Warm Welcome Despite the Weather: Opening Ceremony Sets the Tone
The Over 70’s Cricket World Cup was officially underway following a memorable Opening Ceremony that proved Christchurch hospitality shines, rain or shine.
Originally scheduled to take place on the Iris Lawn at Mona Vale, persistent rain saw the event moved indoors to the historic homestead. The change of setting did little to dampen spirits, with more than 200 players, officials, supporters and invited guests gathering to mark the start of this special international tournament.
The ceremony opened with a heartfelt welcome waiata and haka performed by the kapa haka group from Merrin Primary School, offering visiting teams a powerful and authentic introduction to Māori culture and setting an inclusive, respectful and energetic tone for the week ahead.
Proceedings were expertly MC’d by Malcolm Ellis, Trustee of Canterbury Cricket Trust, who guided the afternoon with warmth and humour. Speeches followed from Stirling Hamman, Chairman of International Masters Cricket, and Jeremy Wilson, Chairman of Veteran Cricket New Zealand. Both speakers reflected on the unique spirit of Masters cricket, the friendships formed across borders, and the privilege of competing at this level.
The tournament was officially declared open in fitting fashion, with the ceremonial first ball bowled by the event’s oldest participant — a moment that perfectly captured the enduring passion, longevity and love of the game that defines the Over 70’s Cricket World Cup.
With the formalities complete, the focus now turns to the cricket itself, as teams from around the world take to the field in what promises to be a week of competitive play, camaraderie and unforgettable moments.
